Fifty Shades of Black Review

Fifty Shades of Black Review

I am going to make this review short and sweet.

The parody movie is dead.

I think its been dead for quite awhile, it has felt that the old Mel Brooks days are long gone. It seems the golden days of Monty Python and Zucker are far behind us. The parody comedy is a joke. Parody movies only amount to a group of actors coming together to reenact complete scenes from the movie in question, only to insert a fart or a sex joke. Being a parody of "Fifty Shades of Grey," just about every joke is a sex joke. "Fifty Shades of Black" is a big handful of easy targets. The thing is, director Micheal Tiddes and writer Marlon Wayans are only interested in taking the easy joke every single scene. There is really nothing to the movie, and honestly not much to review.

"Fifty Shades of Black" is literally a frame-by-frame remake of "Fifty Shades of Grey" just add much more raunchy sex jokes, stupid humor, and some black cultural jokes and you've got "Fifty Shades of Black." It is the most uninspired, uninteresting parody I have seen in awhile and I honestly didn't see the point. Throw a stupid "Magic Mike" gag in there, and you have a stomach-churning mess.

Remember when parodies actually had something to say? Remember when they used the themes and storytelling of the movies being parodied to create original comedy? Remember when filmmakers soaked up the movies they were making fun of to further their comedy, instead of merely remaking movie scenes? To put it bluntly, remember when making a spoof movie was actually funny? For a guy who made two great first "Scary Movie" spoofs, I expected much better. "Fifty Shades of Grey" was an awful movie. As awful a thing I have seen in years. There is so much material in that movie that ripe for a good, old-fashioned spoof. But Marlon Wayans side steps any originality and creativity and moves right to the raunchy jokes, sex jokes and stupid slapstick routines. The thing is, nothing that I see is funny. So Christian Black (Marlon Wayans) is the black version of Christian Grey. At the beginning of the movie, we see him steal the suit he is wearing and steal a car! Oh man, so funny! And did you also know that there are several jokes about black men having small penises? So clever!

There are a few recognizable faces in this movie, and honestly I can't believe they signed up for this. I would name names, but I bet it would hurt more to leave them out, they might think I am doing them a favor. This movie isn't worth the research of cast and crew needed to discuss this movie. Somebody needs to stop spoofing movies until they know how to properly spoof. Or get some ideas from Monty Python or Mel Brooks. What the last great spoof you remember? Nothing rings a bell? Yeah, me neither.

There is nothing worse than a missed opportunity, and "Fifty Shades of Black" positively wreaks of it. Marlon Wayans could have tore "Fifty Shades of Grey" apart, and it would have been delightfully glorious. But he didn't. He completely chickened out. Makes me wonder what the point was in the first place.
