TV REVIEW: "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." (Episode 7. Season 2)

After a week hiatus, we are finally back at it with "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."
Before the hiatus, Director Coulson (Clark Gregg) agreed to give Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) back to his older Senator brother. As one could have probably guessed, Ward was able to easily escape and was on the run during some parts of this episode. Director Coulson sent Agent May (Ming-Na Wen), Lance Hunter (Nick Blood) and Agent Tripett (B.J. Britt) after Ward. Of course, Ward being a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, he was able to elude Coulson's team with ease. After this point, I figured that from this point on, Ward was going t be a full-fledged villain. I thought for sure that he would possible share Big Bad duties with Daniel Whitehall (Reed Diamond). This at least, seemed to be the case when Ward met with Whitehall's subordinates in a secret HYDRA bar. But as May, Tripett and Hunter move in on Ward, they find a gift waiting for them. I am not entirely convinced that Ward is going good. I kind of hope that isn't the case, I don't particularly want his character to be salvaged. I like Brett Dalton playing a villain more so than a hero, and I don't think Ward's story arc can be explored further than this season. I have a guess that Ward will probably die by the end of this season, and I think the show would benefit if it he did so.
Tonight's episode also gave us another storyline to follow. It seems the pieces to the puzzle that is the pictures Director Coulson has been carving since the end of last season. What was also surprising is that the alien blood that helped bring Coulson back from the end was not just used on him, but several other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. But these other agents were never told how they were experimented on and their minds were erased. It seems the alien blood transfusions have been affecting these other S.H.I.E.L.D. agents and all the agents want to figure out what the symbols mean. There is one particular former agent, played by Brian Van Holt, is going over the deep end in order to get results and Coulson has track him down. Its a great guest role for Brian Van Holt, an actor that has become sickeningly underrated. Once again Marvel proves just how well they cast even the smallest of roles and Van Holt does very good work here. The episode is also a great showcase for Chloe Bennett who is bringing more and more life to her role as Skye.
There are lots of directions this second season is taking right now and I am relieved that Marvel is doing such a good job working on all of them. It is pretty clear that the alien symbols, Director Coulson, Skye and the mysterious 084 in the possession of Skye's father are all connected to each other, and I am itching to find out what it all means. I hope we have some big Easter Eggs in the upcoming future and I am just more and more anxious for Tuesday nights now. It's been great so far.
Agree? Disagree? Let me know!
