Another Harry Potter movie coming...
Warner Brothers announced this week that they will have "an expanded creative partnership" with J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series. It seems the springboard for the beginning of this expanded partnership will be a theatrical retelling of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them."
'"Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' is neither a prequel nor sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extenstion of the Wizarding World" says Rowling. The film will follow Newt Scamander and will take place 70 years before the events in the Harry Potter books. Rowling will be writing her very first screenplay for the film, so that is exciting.
As much as I loved the Harry Potter series, movies and books, I wonder about this project. Do we have to cash out on everything that is popular? Can we expect a spin-off or prequel after the last half of "Mockingjay" for "The Hunger Games?" Will the "Twilight" Jacob spin-off really happen? Sometimes I believe Hollywood truly has run out of good ideas, I don't know what else to say about it.
Julianne Moore joins Hunger Games
Julianne Moore has joined the cast for the upcoming "Mockingjay" movies, the first half is due in 2014 and the other in 2015. Moore will join the already all-star heavy cast as President Coin. In the books, President Coin leads Katniss and other rebels against The Capitol. She also has plans of her own...
I like Julianne Moore a lot. I think she will do well with the part, even though we won't see her in the franchise anytime soon, it will be a wait worth having. "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will hit theaters this November!
Star Wars spin-off news
We've known for awhile now that not only will we be getting three more episodes of Star Wars, but also spin-off films within those episodes. These spin-off movies would revolve around Boboa Fett, Han Solo and (maybe) Yoda. Now, we got some more big news this week. We learned that these spin-offs will be prequels about the characters. According to Disney CFO, it is clear that the spin-off movies will be prequels.
For how negatively received the prequels were by most fans, I am a little shocked that Disney has chosen to go the prequel route. Sure, I enjoyed the prequels as a whole. I know I am one of the very few who did and I am not ashamed. Yes, George Lucas could never write a script, but he never could in the 1970's or 1980's either. So I have forgiven him for his sins. However, I don't know if across-the-board prequels is a good idea. We already know the motivations of most of these characters, particularly Boboa Fett. So why do we need to sit through prequel films? What will those films deliver that wasn't in the original saga?
I don't mean to be a negative Nancy, but I just worry. I love "Star Wars" a lot. So I want the films to be good, guided by good ideas. I am just not sure if prequels (again) are good ideas.
