A FIRST LOOK: Oldboy Poster
Back in 2005, I saw a movie that blew my mind completely. A movie that still sits firmly in my top 10 of the 2000's, easily still one of the best films of that decade. It is called "Oldboy" and it is from South Korea. Its a film about a man who gets imprisoned for 15 years, then abruptly set loose. While incarcerated, he learns he has been framed for the murder of his wife and child. He vows revenge on those who imprisoned him and he plans to find out why they did it in the first place, and he discovers some very "messed up" complications.
The film is being remade and will be released later this year. And I've got the first look at the teaser poster. The film will star Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley (Wikus from "District 9") and will be directed by Spike Lee, that's right Spike Lee. I was very surprised to learn that Spike Lee was directing this, simply because its so far out of his comfort zone. For those of you who don't know Mr. Lee, he's a controversial and outspoken filmmaker who seems to hate most white people. He got mad at Clint Eastwood back in 2006 for not featuring any African American soldiers in "Flags of our Fathers" or "Letters From Iowa Jima," (something that turned out to be false). So picking a highly-stylized South Korean thriller to remake with the cast he's chosen seems like an odd choice to me.
Despite his controversy, Spike Lee has made some good movies, "25th Hour," "Do The Right Thing," "Malcolm X," these are all great movies. So I am curious if nothing else to see what he does with this material. With the cast included it shouldn't be boring.

As much as I loved the original, I have shown the film to many people, and they look at me like I am crazy for loving it. I wonder how this remake will pan out.
Oldboy will be released on October 25th, 2013
