Oldboy Red-Band trailer
Earlier this week, I posted a look at the first poster for "Oldboy" a remake of the 2005 South Korean film. This new film is directed by Spike Lee and will star Josh Brolin, Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen and Sharlto Copley.
If you remember from earlier this week, I told all of you how much I loved the original South Korean film. It still remains today one of the best films of the last twenty years, easily. It is also as dark and as twisted as they come. So if you haven't seen the original film, be warned now, this isn't a typical Hollywood tale by any means. I think that is why I loved the original movie so much. South Korea (along with many Asian nations) isn't afraid to not hold anything back, which is why I feel a lot of their cinema is raw but brilliant. This American remake has a lot to live up to.
I'll say this about the trailer: Lee sure has the look right. Josh Brolin in an all black suit weilding a hammer is about as nostalgic as this thing could get. Lee has also put together a stellar cast. I have loved both Josh Brolin and Samuel L. Jackson for as long as I can remember. Elizabeth Olsen continues to prove that she is the Olsen sister worth looking out for. And Sharlto Copley...my God, he's a revelation. If you do not believe me, go rent "District 9" right now, and check him out in 2010's "The A Team." For a guy that never had a dream to be in front of a camera, he's got the goods.
Now I hate to say this, but this film still has a lot riding on it. I hate to admit this to myself, but I am going to have some biases that I am going to wrestle with as this film unfolds. I love the original with a burning passion and I desperately want to "like" this film. We shall see later this year, all I know right now is that October couldn't be a more appropriate release month for this flick.
"Oldboy" will be released on October 8th, 2013.
