RDJ isn't going anywhere for now.
One of the very first things I reported on was RDJ's plans after "The Avengers 2." While I understood full well why Downey Jr. was thinking about moving on to other projects after the big sequel, obviously I was going to miss him. He was born to be Tony Stark, no other actor could capture what it meant to be Stark at the time. I did not want him to go, but I completely understood why.
Soon after that report, it was reported that RDJ was talking to Marvel. He wanted to renegotiate his contract. A light spark grew in the back of my mind and I was hoping for some kind of hope to come from it.
Well there is hope, even if it is a tiny hope. Robert Downey Jr. will return as Iron Man for at least one more movie after "The Avengers 2." That's great news to me, I am glad he will be able to get more mileage out of the character. The next movie RDJ will be in as Iron Man will be...you guessed..."The Avengers 3!"
Gwenyth Paltrow announced in a few interviews that there will not be an "Iron Man 4" any time soon, not anywhere in the foreseeable future. To be honest, after "Iron Man 3," I don't know how bad of an idea that truly is.
All I can say tonight is that I am glad to see RDJ suiting up after Phase Two comes to a close. I am glad that he will play this legendary character one last time. I don't know what is in store for the Marvel Cinematic Universe by Phase Four. (If, by God there is a Phase Four) But the bar has been set very high for these characters.
