Ender's Game Trailer
Okay ladies and gentlemen, I just watched the first full-length trailer of "Ender's Game." I can already pinpoint some good and bad in it.
One thing is for sure about "Ender's Game," the feel and look is totally there. How I imagined Battle School as I read the book so many years ago, looks pretty much as it does in the movie. It looks like we are going to get some great performances from a handful of wonderful actors.
I am also a little hesitant to make this review a full-blown love letter though. Like I said on Sunday regarding the announcement of this trailer. I am huge "Ender's Game" fan. I hold it very dear to my heart. If you also remember reading Sunday, the last time a personal story was adapted, it felt too mediocre. I always try as a movie lover to always keep my heart and mind open to every movie. But I know also know that I will bring the smallest percentage of bias into the theater this November. But I trying really hard not to.
The problems I see are quite clear, and I am hoping that the trailer is leaving LOTS of stuff out. Hopefully so that there are some surprises when we see the movie later this year. Some glaring omissions include nearly no trace of Ender's siblings. This is not a case of just scrapping uneeded characters. Ender's siblings are crucial to the story, and I know as the series of books wears on, their importance is much higher. These are not characters to be treated as window dressing.
I also hope the movie isn't watered down at all to generate a larger audience. There is a part within the first five pages of the book where Ender beats and nearly kills a boy who bullies him. Yeah, Ender is kind of a badass in the book. I hope for that part of his personality to shine in the movie. I don't want a personality change for the sake of getting a PG-13 rating. Peter Jackson proved that he could create a trilogy of films, include the light and the dark of those stories, and be very successful at it.
All in all, I am impressed with the trailer. Hesitations aside, nothing can make me less excited to see an "Ender's Game" movie. If any of you out there have not read the book, I strongly encourage you to do so. You have a little less than 7 months before the movie comes out.
